Meet Pina!

On November 12, 2009, graduation day for Pina, we were thrilled to present a cheque for $10,005.08 to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. We thank all of our Members and friends who generously contributed.

Pina graduated from the Special Skills Dog program and has been partnered with Linda, a warm and wonderful Kitchener resident who lives with Multiple Sclerosis. We hope to see lots more of Linda and Pina!

For the second year, YNCU was proud to have adopted a Future Dog Guide! In 2006, we (formerly Grand River Credit Union) adopted Dreyfus who went on to become a Special Skills Dog and was partnered with Thea. (Read more about Dreyfus.)

Pina was placed in foster care with Helen and David for her first year, where she became socialized and was taught proper house manners and basic obedience while being exposed to as many different situations, experiences and people as possible.

She was assessed every 4 - 6 weeks to evaluate her progress. Usually at about one year of age, the puppies are recalled, assessed and assigned to one of three programs for 6 - 8 months of training. Pina developed quickly and was recalled at about 9 months old, leading to her successful graduation and placement with Linda.

Helen and Pina dropped by some of our branches regularly and it was heartwarming to see her develop. Pina attended our Fischer-Hallman branch bar-b-que where we raised over $400 through the generous support of our members and staff. Pina was a big hit with staff and visitors alike!

It can take up to $20,000 to raise and train a puppy to be a Canine Vision, Hearing Ear or Special Skills Dog Guide.
