HOW DOES THE NEIGHBOURHOOD BUILDER GIC WORK?

When you purchase a Neighbourhood Builder GIC, YNCU will donate .20% of the total investment value to local Habitat for Humanity chapters within our branch network. The donation will be distributed evenly between five preselected Habitat chapters and be used to fund future home builds, maintain day-to-day operations, and provide funding for additional Habitat events.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on the support of volunteers and donors to deploy home building programs throughout our communities.  

Your generosity makes it possible for local Habitat for Humanity chapters to fund projects and create the opportunity for even more low-income, working families achieve independence through the purchase of their own home.

The donation will be split equally between five Habitat for Humanity locations across our branch network and will be used to fund future home builds, maintain day-to-day operations, and provide funding for additional Habitat events. If you’re looking to do more to support Habitat for Humanity, we recommend visiting your local Habitat for Humanity website to learn about their upcoming projects and consider either making a cash donation personally or volunteer at a Habitat event or even a home build.

The interest rate on the Neighbourhood Builder GIC is slightly lower than a traditional 1-year GIC. When you purchase this GIC, you are generously agreeing to receive 0.10% less on your rate, and YNCU will be matching the 0.10% for a total donation of 0.20% to Habitat for Humanity.

Other financial institutions have had similar products raising funds for community projects, however, what makes the Neighbouhood Builder GIC unique is its partnership with the Habitat for Humanity regional locations to fund future building projects.

No, a tax receipt will not be issued for the contribution made by YNCU. Because you have agreed to receive a 0.10% lower interest rate than the traditional 1-year GIC, the contribution being made is not based on your personal investment earnings, but rather the amount invested when purchasing the Neighbourhood Builder GIC from YNCU.

HOW TO OPEN A TERM DEPOST ONLINE:

  1. Log into Online Banking

  2. Select “Account Services”

  3. Then select “Open a New Account”, select "Term Deposits" and then choose the term or special you would like to open. Registered products (TFSA, RRSP, RRIF) need to be opened by one of our branch staff.

The Neighbourhood Builder GIC was established to help raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. The GIC is only available for a 1-year term. At the end of the sales period, YNCU will donate based on the total amount invested in the Neighbourhood Builder GIC and will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, Heartland Ontario, Guelph Wellington, Windsor-Essex & Sault Ste Marie & Area locations. The donation will be $2.00 for every $1,000 invested in the Neighbourhood Builder GIC. YNCU is not affiliated with Habitat in any business-related manner, and this is strictly a charitable contribution. YNCU does not receive any financial gain from Habitat or related entities.
