Commonly asked questions
Many YNCU GICs can be opened with a minimum deposit of $1,000. Some GIC options may have a different minimum, depending on the term, interest payment option, or offer. Before you open a GIC, review the details so you know the minimum deposit, rate, term, and any access rules.
It depends on the GIC. Some GICs are non-redeemable, while others may be redeemable or cashable under specific terms.
A registered GIC is held inside a registered plan, such as a TFSA, RRSP, RRIF, RESP, or FHSA. A non-registered GIC is held outside a registered plan.
A GIC may offer a higher guaranteed rate because you agree to keep your money invested for a set term while a savings account usually gives you more access to your money.
When your GIC matures, you may be able to reinvest it, move the money to another account, or withdraw it, depending on your instructions and product terms.
GICs are considered a lower-risk option because your principal is protected when held according to the GIC terms. Eligible deposits may also be covered under applicable deposit insurance guidelines.
Yes, eligible GICs may be available inside registered plans such as a TFSA or RRSP, depending on the product and account type.

Eligibility and product terms
YNCU GICs and term deposits are offered by Your Neighbourhood Credit Union Limited (“YNCU”), an Ontario credit union. Membership, identity verification and product eligibility requirements apply. Minimum deposits, available terms, registration options and payment choices vary by product. Your investment is governed by the applicable deposit agreement, confirmation and product disclosures provided to you.
†Interest rates and returns
Fixed-rate GIC interest rates are expressed as annual rates, not the total return over the investment term. Posted rates may change before your investment is issued. The confirmed rate for a fixed-rate GIC applies for its agreed term, subject to any early-redemption provisions.
Interest calculation, compounding and payment frequency depend on the product and payment option selected. Interest may be paid monthly, annually or at maturity where those options are available. Interest paid out during the term is not automatically compounded within the GIC. See your investment confirmation for the applicable calculation and payment terms.
Featured offers
Featured GIC offers are subject to availability and their specific eligibility requirements, minimum deposits, terms and funding conditions. An advertised rate applies only to the product, term, deposit amount and payment option identified. Refer to the applicable offer details before investing. Changes to posted offers do not change the agreed terms of an existing fixed-rate GIC.
Principal protection
Principal and interest guarantees are obligations of the issuing institution under the applicable deposit agreement. For a conventional fixed-rate YNCU GIC held to maturity, YNCU guarantees repayment of the principal and interest payable under that agreement. Principal protection and deposit insurance are different: deposit insurance has its own eligibility requirements and coverage limits.
Early redemption and access to funds
Non-redeemable GICs generally cannot be withdrawn before maturity. Redeemable or cashable GICs permit access only under their specific terms, which may include a minimum holding period, withdrawal requirements and an adjusted interest rate or reduced interest payment. Do not assume that partial withdrawals or early redemption are available for every product.
Market-linked GICs
Market-linked GICs differ from conventional fixed-rate GICs. Their return depends on the performance of specified benchmarks and the calculation formula in the product disclosure. Unless a minimum return is expressly stated, the return may be zero.
Participation rates, return caps, averaging methods and other formula provisions may limit the return. A stated maximum return is not a promised return. A cumulative return over the full term is not an annual interest rate.
Principal protection applies at maturity under the product terms. Early redemption may not be available. Investing in a market-linked GIC does not give you direct ownership of the underlying securities or entitlement to their dividends unless expressly provided in the product terms.
Step-up and regular-contribution GICs
Step-up GIC rates apply during the specified periods of the term. The highest scheduled rate does not apply throughout the entire term. Regular-contribution GICs are subject to their contribution schedule and product terms; total interest earned depends on the amount and timing of contributions.
Maturity and renewal
Your maturity instructions and deposit agreement determine what happens when your GIC matures. Where automatic renewal applies, the renewal rate and terms are those applicable at renewal and may differ from your original investment. Review your maturity instructions and contact YNCU before maturity if you want to change them.
Registered GICs
A GIC held within a TFSA, RRSP, FHSA or other registered plan remains subject to both the GIC’s terms and the plan’s rules. GIC maturity does not automatically make a withdrawal tax-free or remove registered-plan restrictions. Eligibility, contribution limits and withdrawal requirements apply.
*Deposit insurance
Eligible YNCU deposits payable in Canada in Canadian dollars are protected by the Deposit Insurance Reserve Fund administered by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (“FSRA”), subject to its coverage rules.
Basic coverage for eligible non-registered deposits is up to $250,000 per depositor at YNCU, including principal and interest combined. Eligible deposits in the same ownership category are combined, including eligible balances in savings accounts, chequing accounts and GICs. Opening additional accounts or holding deposits at different YNCU branches does not create separate coverage.
Eligible deposits in registered accounts have unlimited coverage. Separate coverage may apply to qualifying joint, trust and business accounts. For eligible index-linked term deposits, FSRA coverage applies to the principal portion only.
Foreign currency deposits, membership shares, mutual funds and securities are not covered. FSRA’s liability to insure deposits is limited to the assets of the Deposit Insurance Reserve Fund. GICs issued by another institution are subject to that issuer’s applicable deposit insurance arrangements, rather than automatically receiving YNCU’s coverage.
Visit FSRA’s deposit insurance page for complete details.
