Lace 'em up! Area business offers free skating lessons to newcomers
October 14, 2023
For many people, skating is more than a Canadian pastime. It is a first step onto the ice, into a new experience, and into a community that feels a little more familiar. Motivate 2 Skate is a free YNCU program that helps newcomers, international students, and young learners build confidence on the ice in a safe, welcoming space. With experienced instructors, skates, and helmets provided during the program, participants can focus on learning, laughing, and finding their balance.

YNCU provides an environment of inclusivity, acceptance and awareness for our communities, staff, and members. YNCU cares about everyone in our community regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, religious beliefs, age, or disability.
YNCU strives to be a diverse workplace reflective of the communities that we live in. We are committed to a diverse workforce and have established a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion working group to help us deliver on our commitments.
We aim to ensure that each of our employees feels safe and happy to come to work each day in an environment where they feel their differences are respected and celebrated by all. We are committed to working harder to create meaningful change in the workplace and learning how to contribute positively to the conversations happening in our communities.
The Debbie Sims Memorial Scholarship, established in 2024, was created in honour of Debbie Sims, a dedicated YNCU employee who devoted nearly 40 years to the credit union system. Passionate about hockey, empowering girls in sport, and leading with kindness and compassion, Debbie embodied the values of good sportsmanship—respect, fair play, humility, gratitude, and generosity—which this scholarship continues to recognize in young girls in hockey.
